Essay Contest :  Eliminating prejudice in my life

In the aftermath of the genocide in Bosnia, in a society devastated by the loss of over 200,000 victims of genocide, bigotry, prejudice and intolerance, and a displacement of over 2,000,000 people, young people want to prevent this from ever occurring again.

Prejudice is the first step on the road leading to genocide. Other steps include stereotyping, discrimination, harassment and violence.

Bosnia and Herzegovina represented a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious society until aggression and genocide strove to destroy those values inherent to the country. It is our wish that by expressing themselves and writing about forms of prejudice that they have encountered in their lives, young people can actively participate in making a difference.

What steps will you take – what will you do – how will you act to eliminate prejudice and genocide in your lifetime?

A Statement by the Bosnian American Genocide Institute and Education Center on the Arrest of Ratko Mladic

The significance of the Serbian government’s arrest of general Ratko Mladic as ordered by President Boris Tadic is enormous, as it enables the courts to start criminal proceedings against one of the worst war criminals. The indictment includes war crimes against humanity and international law during the aggression on Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1995, as well as the genocide of Bosniaks in Srebrenica, where more than 8000 unarmed men and boys were killed and more than 25000 women, children, and elderly were expelled from their homes, all under direct orders from Mladic.

As an Egyptian-born American who has lived through the surging and receding waves of anti-Muslim misunderstanding, I have always felt compelled to explain my Egyptian, Arab, and Muslim culture to my American neighbors, friends, and family. For many years, I have led groups of Americans to Egypt and other Arab countries to help improve U.S.-Muslim relations by providing experiences for Americans

Dayton in Bosnia and Herzegovina: 15 years after –Experiment in democratic governance

Author: Haris Alibasic, MPA, PhD Candidate

Without truly reforming the Dayton agreement, the Bosnian government's hands are tied. Bosnia has a very ethno-centric political system, where nationalistic sentiments easily prevail over economic or other issues. Bosnia and Herzegovina was divided into two political entities, Republika Srpska (RS) and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The main problem with this division is that “the ethnic majority in the RS was made possible only by ethnic cleansing” (Stadlober, 2010, para. 7).

Bosnia
By Florence Hartmann

The conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina, which began in April 1992 and ended in November 1995, has come to be seen as the model for wars of ethnic cleansing throughout the world. This was the most violent event Europe experienced since World War II, and the devastation of the small multiethnic state recalled the ruins of Germany after the Allied bombing. The methods of ethnic cleansing, used for conquest of territory were a repudiation of the lessons of World War II as codified in the Geneva Conventions. Practically the only saving grace in Western policy making during the three-and-a-half-year war was the decision to launch an international war crimes tribunal to indict and try some of those responsible.

The UN Security Council extended the war crimes tribunal established to prosecute war criminals in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda by setting up a new body that will finish the remaining work.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), based in The Hague, was created 17 years ago and has since indicted 161 persons for war crimes committed in the region. Two indictees, Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic, still remain at large and their capture would send a message of reconciliation to the victims and give credibility to the international legal system.

Serge Brammertz, Prosecutor for the ICTY frames this concern as such, “Serbia must bridge the gap between its stated commitment to the arrests and the effectiveness of its operations on the ground… Time is passing and we are not seeing results…Serbia needs to adopt a more pro-active approach to arresting fugitives.”  ( UN News Center)

The extension dubbed the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals will begin functioning on July 1 2013 as is slated to complete all remaining work no later than December 31, 2014

The Letter of the Canadian-Bosniak Community to the Members of the House of Commons and Senate of the Canadian Parliament

Dear Honorable Members of the House of Commons and Senate,

The Canadian government claims to uphold a democratic system that values peace, humanity and multiculturalism and portrays itself as proud to lead a country that abides by both national and international laws.  In many cases, Canada demonstrates to the world that we are who we say we are, but in other cases we embarrass ourselves by failing to stand for the things we say we stand for.  We are writing today to bring to light one recent example where Canada’s government has failed its citizens, and the international community as a whole, and to ask you to consider rectifying the situation without delay

The Genocide Prevention Group Solemnly Commemorates Srebrenica Remembrance Day

The Genocide Prevention Group remembers the tragedy of the Srebrenica Genocide

On January 11, 1995, the army and police of “Republika Srpska” in Bosnia and Herzegovina staged a 5-day siege of Srebrenica that led to the deaths of 8,000 innocent Muslim citizens. Taking place within a UN-declared safe haven, the massacre is remembered as a failure of the will of the international community to prevent atrocities, and a failure of Serbia and Montenegro to fulfill their obligations to prevent genocide

The Bosnian- American Genocide Institute and Education Center (BAGI) organized a panel discussion at the 47th Annual ISNA Convention, July 2 - 5, 2010, Rosemont Convention Center, 5555 N. River Road, Rosemont, IL 60018:

Aggression Against Bosnia Herzegovina and Genocide Against Bosniaks: Manipulation or Misinterpretation?

The American Muslim community is aware of the atrocities and aggression against Muslims in Bosnia Herzegovina (1992-1995) and the genocide against Bosnians. However, what has happened since then towards justice and to the Bosnians themselves? At both the political and societal levels in Europe and in the U.S., the facts have been obscured and the picture of what happened has been manipulated to portray the scenario as a civil war and not as the genocide that occurred. Among the American Bosnian community's victories is the recently passed State of Illinois' Resolution commemorating July 11, 2020 as the Remembrance of the Genocide of Srebrenica, where 8000 Muslim men and boys were executed in four days in 1994.

THE INTERNATIONAL DAY IN MEMORY OF THE VICTIMS OF THE HOLOCAUST

Institute for the Research of Genocide Canada
Authors: Emir Ramic and Sanja Seferovic-Drnovsek

Today, we commemorate the millions of victims of Nazi persecution. We solemnly reflect on the massacre of nearly one third of the Jewish people and countless other minorities. We gather here today, united by a common responsibility, to never allow those who suffered atrocious acts of discrimination, deprivation, cruelty, and murder, fade in vain with the sands of time. To this end, Holocaust education has provided us with an exemplary model of how humanity can unite to honor the victims of persecution, and give them a permanent place in our collective memory.
